Louis Roederer Brut Vintage 2009 - £69.95

All Louis Roederer vintage champagnes are made using grapes from their own estate. Fascinated by the aromatic diversity of Pinot Noir in Champagne, Louis Roederer use the structure and power of the Pinot Noir grapes from the Montagne de Reims to create their Brut Vintage blend. Exposed to the north-east, these vineyards produce grapes that mature much slower, thereby making wines that are sometimes rough and closed at the beginning of the ageing process. However, the character of the Pinot Noir intensifies and becomes more refined through long ageing in wood. It is the Pinot Noirs from the Grand Cru rated village of Verzenay in particular that give the champagnes their velvety, creamy and elegant palate.

The Chardonnay from the most east facing vineyards in Chouilly brings the richness and generosity to the champagne. Some of the wine (the percentage varies each year) is fermented in large oak tanks and once in the bottle, the champagnes ages on the lees for at least four years and is rested for six months after disgorgement to attain optimal maturity.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a continental, sunny year with a real winter that was very cold and dry followed by a glorious sun-filled summer and almost no rain in August and September. The harvest was incomparable in terms of quality and produced consistent, fresh and crunchy grapes.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 90% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay
Ageing: 7 years on the lees
Dosage: 9 g/l
Drink: Now to 2026

Tasting Note: A ravishing bouquet on the nose which is generous and deep, ruled by the red fruits that dominate the blend. Orchard fruits on the palate combine with soft, mineral qualities. With age, this vintage is certain to develop and increase in structure.

Our staff have been trained on our policy of 'Challenge 25' to ensure age verification is robustly enforced in the shop and when making deliveries.

“ The 2009 Brut Vintage is fascinating to taste next to the 2012. Time in bottle has softened some of the edges, but the 2009 remains a gorgeous Champagne with tons of up-front appeal. Pastry, spice and a range of tropical notes show how much allure this ripe, radiant vintage has to offer. The 2009 is just entering its first plateau of maturity, that stage where its aromatics are starting to develop, and yet it also has more than enough freshness to drink well for another decade or more.”

“Estate bottled, so always from same 10 parcels, chosen for their style. Soil is more influential than blend. From 7 ha in Verzenay on chalk and clay. The Pinot Noir is a bit austere with some oyster shells. Plus 3 ha of south-east-facing Chouilly Chardonnay. 70% very cool Pinot Noir and 30% ripe Chardonnay fermented separately. Sometimes one of the 10 blocks is not used. Up to 50% of the Pinot is fermented in large old oak. No malo. They released the 2009 before the 2008. Dosage 8 g/l.
Broad, savoury nose really quite meaty! Lots of depth on the nose. Racy, bone dry and rather majestic on the palate. Big and bold.
Drink 2017-2026”

“Deep flavoured and exciting. Relatively rich (because of the vintage presumably) but with a great array of flavours. Long. A really satisfying drink. Lots to enjoy. Though not as long as the Pol Roger 2008.”

“Discreetly fruity nose with red fruit dominance, soft spicy and honeyed tones. Up-front palate with round body and big, soft mousse. Lovely twist of acidity at the end.”
